In small villages and rural areas of Uganda, people often must rely on contaminated swamps and boreholes that are miles away for their water. They fetch water in old gasoline cans and use what they collect to drink, cook with and bathe. With limited knowledge of sanitation practices, the water results in them becoming sick and without the means to see a doctor or receive adequate medical attention, this often proves fatal.
Uganda Tree of Life Ministries and our partners at New Life Ministries identifiy the neediest areas goes into these villages to creates a partnership with the village leaders. From there, a Community Water committee is created and the process of bringing clean, life saving water is started! Read below to see what the process looks like from square one and how you can become involved!
In conjunction with our partners at New Life Ministries, we identify communities and towns in need of water and share all findings with both the UTOLM board. We examine the community population, poverty levels, distance to nearest well and educational resources when deciding where to plant wells.
We ask the community in need to form a water committee to fund raise money for the well in addition to praying for the process from beginning to end. This encourages community involvement, sacrifice, buy in as well as preserving the dignity of the community.
With the funds from the community in combination with UTOLM contribution, we can secure the funding for a well.
It costs $7,000 to drill a well for around 2,000 people. This will often provide water for the community and surrounding areas for generations to come!
Our UTOLM president, Chris Knippa works closely with many local Ugandan water drillers to contract a reliable and trustworthy company that will get the job done right. A representative from UTOLM is always present when a new well is being dug.
The local contractors go out to survey the land and determine where the most appropriate and beneficial place would be to install the well. They are looking for deep groundwater in order to guarantee a continuous flow for many years to come.
Once the survey comes back and the location is determined, the drillers go out with their trucks and equipment to drill the well. We also install a purification system to ensure the water quality being used by the community is safe and clean.
Once the well is fully installed, we have a community gathering where we share the gospel, hand out Bibles as well as show The Jesus Film Project. For many people, it is their first time watching a movie and having freshwater nearby. There is dancing, praising, rejoicing and thanking the Lord for answering prayers!
